Grows as a deciduous tree or spreading shrub. Can reach 12 to 15 feet tall. Plants can grow together to create large, dense thickets that are impenetrable due to their long thorns. It can be found growing in open fields, forest edges, upland areas, and riparian areas, but grows best in moist sites with partial shade. Important wildlife species as it provides food and cover.
