Soil Health Breakfast | 12.12.24

Palouse Conservation District

Updated: Dec 10, 2024

Join Palouse Conservation District for the December Soil Health Breakfast on Thursday, December 12th, 2024 from 7-9 am at The Center in Colfax (attached to the library - 110 S Main St, Colfax, WA 99111). Enjoy coffee and breakfast as you learn about the soil health practices that your fellow producers are implementing on their operations. This event is intended as a peer-to-peer learning opportunity for local farmers and ranchers. We will also hear from Kurt Braunwart (ProGene) about winter pulses.

In recent years, Kurt has endeavored to help advance developments in a certain niche of the region’s agricultural market which, if successful, could yield wide-ranging benefits for producers, processors, and local/regional markets—that niche is winter pulses. Kurt sees an interesting and compelling space for this often-overlooked specialty crop and aims to bring varieties with improved marketability to regional producers. Beyond mere commodity markets, Kurt will discuss the benefits that winter peas could bring to crop rotations and resource concerns on the Palouse, encouraging all market participants to think outside the box.

7:00 am | Breakfast is served!

About our speaker:

Kurt began his career as a fieldman for Rogers Seed Company in 1974 in Twin Falls, Idaho. In 1980, he moved to Colfax, Washington as Plant Manager and later to Othello, Washington as Operations Manager. In 1995, Kurt purchased and carried forward a dry pea breeding program from Rogers Seed Company. This business became ProGene Plant Research in 1996.

Kurt's interests and talents lie in business development as a bridge between research and marketing of varieties in the industry and leveraging strategic partnerships throughout the region. Kurt also established the nationally recognized brand of EverLeaf oats which matches high quality and tonnage in the same varieties.
